Going back to all the inspiration that K gives me, This weeks lesson focuses on colors and for the older kids, emotion. I had all the kids name every color they could think of then we went through the list and I had the kids tell me the first thing that came to mind when I said that color. It was interesting, Owen (at 5) said all the things he sees on a regular basis (his brown bear, his blue blanket, my turquoise chair, Lorali's pink night-night. Lorali (8) brought up found and discovered and detailed objects (purple flowers, lime caterpillars, daddy's bright blue eyes). It was Ethan (10) my autistic son that surprised me the most. EVERY SINGLE COLOR that I said, he had a very specific emotion for. (orange anger, blue peace, magenta excitement, lime confusion) By the end of the list of colors (there were about 30 I was just bawling. It was a fascinating moment and only reminded me how little I know about what or how he is thinking. I'm thankful I get to have this time with him to learn from him and understand him better. I really wish I would have recorded this unexpected but perfect glimpse I got into the way his mind works so beautifully different then my own.
After talking about color and emotion and bringing back the color wheel from Lesson 1, they decided they were sick of talking and just wanted to start the assignment and anytime they're begging to get to work I call a success. The assignment this week was to make color hands, one with warm colors, one with cool colors. It was fun to see how they decided to each do them and how individual they all turned out.
Everyone got to choose what medium they wanted to use for this project but surprisingly they all picked markers, maybe they just grabbed what they were most familiar with but it's really got me thinking about ways to introduce different ways to do the same thing so I'm sure that'll be in an upcoming lesson soon.
